übersteigert is my photo portfolio. It shows the pictures from my travels and outings that mean the most to me.
I’m Benno Schneider, and I have been taking photographs for more than 40 years as a keen amateur. The cameras have changed many times over the years; the joy of photography hasn’t.
Landscape is what draws me most: the light along the coast of Brittany, the hills of Tuscany, a quiet spring morning on the Baltic. Almost all of my photos are taken while travelling. I rarely travel in order to take pictures, but I hardly ever travel without a camera. When I go through the pictures later, I’m back there once more.
On the road I am always looking for a good composition. For that I stop, take a few steps back, look for another angle. My travel companions know this and wait, sometimes more patiently, sometimes less. That is also where the name of this website comes from: I was once jokingly accused of pursuing my hobby in an “übersteigert” way – German for overdone, excessive – and of getting completely carried away by photography. That’s true.
I have particularly fond memories of Venice. I was there in May 2021, in the middle of the pandemic, and the city was comparatively empty. A great composition waited around almost every corner, and I had time to work on each one in peace.
Since 2020 I have also been pointing the camera upwards. Astrophotography takes patience: long nights, many exposures and even more hours at the computer afterwards. In return it shows what you would never see with the naked eye. You can find my astrophotos on AstroBin.
If a picture speaks to you or you have a question, write to me.
